An integrated ESG story
As environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues rise up the corporate agenda, there is a good deal of talk about purpose-led companies and the role of business in wider society. Severn Trent Water stands out as a company that genuinely walks the talk, with social purpose and sustainability fully embedded in what it does and, in turn, fully integrated in its corporate reporting.
All this provided a wealth of material for the Annual Report, a maiden Sustainability Report and a series of ESG-focused communications. The Annual Report presented a strong commitment to purpose and values, detailed ESG disclosures and key achievements of its ‘Living our values’ employee campaign. The visual treatment, which focused on people and nature, combined with ESG-focused narrative to deliver powerful purpose-led corporate reporting.
To present a more detailed ESG story, we created Seven Trent Water’s first standalone Sustainability Report. The challenge was to effectively tell the story of its planned £1.2bn investment in sustainability over the 2020–25 regulatory period and highlight strategy, challenges, achievements and performance metrics.
Luminous provided insight generation, strategic advice, writing and design. The process included interviewing the executive team to gain a deep understanding of context, challenges and business strategy. Our strategists helped to hone a clear ESG narrative, focusing on the company’s commitment to the region and its unique ability to deliver for the environment and society.
We aligned performance with the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) framework and UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and supported the team with advice on its maiden disclosure against the recommendations of the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD).
We also developed communications for an ESG-focused Capital Markets Day. This included an animated film presented to investors and an inventive foldout poster that summarised ESG activities with impact.
The animation showed how Severn Trent Water was investing billions in creating a better environment: improving biodiversity, reducing leakage and educating the next generation about water and the environment. A shorter edit was distributed via social media.
To give stakeholders something to physically engage with and retain as a useful reference guide, a foldout brochure outlined Severn Trent Water’s approach to sustainability. Central to the brochure was a powerful infographic, created to give stakeholders something they can review on a single page that showed all ESG commitments in an accessible manner.
