We were appointed to the project after a lengthy pitch process involving some of the UK’s top design agencies. With over 300 pages, two seperate Reports (BBC Trust and BBC Executive), online financial statements and governance, four regional management and audience council annual reviews, produced in two languages both in print and online, producing the BBC Annual Report is the kind of challenge we thrive on. The communication challenge was how to demonstrate to their key stakeholders how the BBC offer a quality service that is both world-leading and value for money.
Initially in 2009 we restructured the content and improved accessibility through colour coded tabbing and double page divider spreads. We communicated priorities, objectives and strategies in a concise and engaging way, ensuring the design worked for the skim, as well as the in-depth, reader. In 2010 the two annual reports were bound together in one document, with gatefolds working as internal covers for the two reports. This smart use of production enabled key overview information to be presented across three spreads, providing an insightful ‘at a glance’ experience for the skim reader.
